Rise to the Occasion

One of the wonderful things about the world of coaching, especially when you are the coachee, is the guilt-free, unashamedly self-indulgent time spent focusing on yourself.  It’s kind of  like a mental and emotional Thai massage.  Just like Thai massage, it hurts at times, feels divine at others, but always leaves you with a deep sense of well being.

On the first day of the Abu Dhabi Formula 1, the super-talented Beyonce lit up Yas Island in front of thousands of deliriously sweaty fans.  No more than 15 metres from the stage, I was standing in the throng, defending a few centimetres of space, and holding on to high expectations.  She met them.  Effortlessly, and with great gusto.  These are the mental notes I made while shifting from side to side to see through the throng of cameras and mobiles held aloft to capture the moment.

The first pediatrician I consulted explained to me what a newborn’s only language is crying.  “Don’t assume something is wrong”, he said comfortingly. “She may just be trying to communicate with you, but hasn’t got any words yet”.  Right.  No words, I thought to myself, but the tone is crystal clear – and it is not the kind of tone I would dare impose on fellow diners anywhere.
