After suffering from HTC EVO envy, I decided to take the plunge and spend a few hours (days) embracing the whole Android experience.

My HD2 has worked beautifully since I got my grubby hands on it in November last year.  But somehow, with all these releases of Android coming out, the lovely people over at xda-developers working on a port, and let’s face it, shorter working Ramadan hours, I got me a project.

I’m happy to report that barring a few hiccups, I’m incredibly happy with my born-again HD2 in its Android 2.2 (yup, Froyo no less) incarnation.  The best part is that should anything weird happen, I can just reboot straight back into good ol’ WinMo.

I will post a quick how-to that puts together my hours (nights) trawling through forums, blogs and frustrating download sites – soon!

Last October I fell in love with the HTC HD2 – mostly because of the huge, gorgeous screen.  Like most of my previous phones, it runs Windows Mobile.

It is often mistaken for an iPhone, though it’s bigger, and obviously does certain things better than the iPhone.  Things that are not necessarily considered cool, but that are important to me.

I refuse to take sides in the whole Apple, Google, Microsoft confusing maze of suits and countersuits.  I think Apple makes great gadgets for consuming content (love my iPod), Microsoft is unparalleled in office productivity, and Google is my go-to guy for anything web.  The three brands happily co-exist in my life, and I pick the right hammer depending on the nail I need to drive home.

However, with the release of Android 2.2, I have a dilemma: I want my beautiful, huge HTC HD2 phone to continue to its flawless integration with my work software, yet benefit from the fast and light-weight nature of Android.  HTC HD2 can already run Android third party apps, but I want the whole thing.  And I can’t wait for Evo.

I had a similar dilemma when the iPad was launched.  I loved the idea of the huge screen, but found it limited beyond the wow factor of early adopter privilege.  Frankly, when I want to read a book, I read a real book.  When I reach for reading materials while stuck waiting for something / someone, the eReader on the HD2 does a splendid job.

So here I am – waiting for the HD2 Android port,  4G availability at reasonable cost in the UAE, the Evo.

Or I could shop for a bigger handbag and carry them all around with me.  Not.
